LIVING STRUCTURES

DESIGN AND CUNSTRUCTION WITH EARTH.

ESFAHK MUD CENTER AND CAAI (CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTS ASSOCIATION OF IRAN)

There is no short path for obtaining the knowledge achieved during centuries of human effort to live and survive in the harsh conditions of deserts. Knowledge and understanding requires patience and observation. To take a step forward, one must know the path they are taking. A path which is a continuous bridge connecting the past to the future. In this course we start the understanding by recognizing the material: soil. We begin designing from smaller parts: adobe. To build, we use an all too familiar tool: our hands.

Our goal in this project is to build a structure that solves a real problem for the residents of the small town of Isfahak. This structure will require their attention in order to survive in time.

By learning Iranian traditional architectural techniques and by taking into consideration the purpose of the course, I exclusively designed this part of the project. Afterwards, we experimented on a 1:10 scale model for its sustainability and stability.
